Arcturus: everything you need to know about the new Covid version

The World Health Organization has announced that it is monitoring a new Covid variation known as Arcturus, as reports of traces in the UK grow.
Arcturus, also known as XBB.1.16, was found in January and has been tracked by the WHO since March 22, 2023.
It is the most current Omicron sub-variant and may be 1.2 times more contagious than any of its predecessors, according to specialists.

Which countries have Arcturus cases been reported?

The WHO has confirmed that the new variant has been found in 22 countries, including the United Kingdom, the United States, Australia, and Singapore.
However, the variety has been widely reported in India, where infections are on the rise and there is widespread concern about rising cases.
Two Indian states have also resumed the wearing of masks in public places, with the health ministry conducting simulated drills to determine whether hospitals were prepared to deal with the expected surge in patient numbers.
According to Forbes, the Arcturus variety has increased from roughly 0.21% of Covid cases worldwide in late February to nearly 3.96% in March.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the new variation accounted for 7.2% of all Covid cases in the United States from April 9 to April 15, up from 3.9% the previous week.

Is the Arcturus variety more contagious?

Acrturus may be 1.2 times more contagious than the last important subvariant, the Kraken XBB.1.5 strain, according to research.
Maria van Kerkhove, the WHO's Covid technical lead, stated at a press conference in March that the new type, XBB.1.16, is more infectious than Kraken XBB.1.5.
Despite being comparable to XBB.1.5, "it has one additional mutation in the spike protein that in lab studies shows increased infectivity as well as potential increased pathogenicity," she explained.
"At the moment, there are only about 800 sequences of XBB.1.16 from 22 countries," Van Kerkhove added.
She claims that the majority of the sequences come from India, where XBB.1.16 has replaced the other versions.
"So far, reports do not show an increase in hospitalizations, ICU admissions, or deaths as a result of XBB.1.16," she noted.

What are the Arcturus variant symptoms?

Doctors say the XBB.1.16 or Arcturus variety has symptoms comparable to the other Covid variants, such as fever, cough, difficulty breathing, exhaustion, and more.
This version, however, is thought to induce a greater fever in individuals infected, as well as a different symptom, "itchy" conjunctivitis or pinkeye - particularly in youngsters.

Is the new Covid version affecting the United Kingdom?

According to MailOnline, the Arcturus variety was discovered in the UK in March, and roughly 50 instances have since been discovered.
According to the UKHSA, it is constantly analyzing "all available data relating to SARS-CoV-2 variants in the UK and abroad and is closely monitoring the situation."
"Vaccination remains our best defense against future COVID-19 waves, so it is as important as ever that people come in and get all of the doses for which they are eligible as soon as possible," the statement continued.
