At a retail center in the Dallas region of Texas, a shooter shot and killed eight people while also injuring a number of others.
According to authorities, a nearby police officer shot and killed the shooter.
The attack at Allen Premium Outlets, the most recent instance of gun violence in the US, also left seven other individuals injured, three of them gravely.
Although witnesses saw children among the victims, authorities did not immediately release information about them.
Some claimed to have also seen what seemed to be an unconscious police officer and mall security guard.
An internet dashcam footage depicted a gunman exiting a car in front of the retail center and starting to shoot at pedestrians there. The sound of more than 30 gunfire could be heard as the vehicle that was filming the incident accelerated.
Wetzel's Pretzels shift leader Maxwell Gum, 16, was on his lunch break when a family with little English came into the back of his business and yelled, "Gun! Shoot!" as shooting could be heard in the distance.
He led the family into the broad delivery corridor that snakes behind the stores in the hopes that it would serve as a secure hiding place. The scene was chaotic.

Payton remarked, "It was so loud, it sounded like it was right outside."

Payton noticed the store had shattered glass and a blood trail leading to the door when they were given the all-clear to depart. Clothes covered in blood and abandoned footwear were nearby.
Payton claimed he saw bodies once he was outside.
He said, "I hope it wasn't kids, but it looked like kids." He claimed that the victims were slumped over bags on the ground and were wrapped in white towels.
"When I walked out to see that," he recalled, "it broke me."
He could see the body of a large man wearing all black further distant. Because it had not been wrapped up like the other dead, Payton claimed that he suspected it to be the shooter.
Tarakram Nunna, 25, and Ramakrishna Mullapudi, 26, claimed to have seen three people, including one who appeared to be a police officer and another who appeared to be a mall security guard, lying motionless on the ground.
Sharkie Mouli, 24, a different consumer, claimed that he sheltered during the shooting inside a Banana Republic store. He noticed two unconscious people outside the outlet store as he was leaving, one of them appeared to be a police officer.
A man who appeared to be passing out and his rifle were also seen next to the suspect, Mouli reported.
When the shooting began, Stan and Mary Ann Greene were perusing the Columbia clothing section.
Mary Ann Greene told the AP, "We had just gotten in, just a couple minutes earlier, and we just heard a lot of loud popping."
The security gate was quickly rolled down by staff, who then guided everyone to the back of the store until police arrived and led everybody out, according to the Greenes.
