Following his hospitalization, Pope Francis' health appears to be improving.

The Vatican has verified that Pope Francis' health is improving after he was admitted to a hospital with a respiratory condition. The pope, 86, is still being treated, according to Vatican spokesman Matteo Bruni, but "His Holiness Pope Francis rested well during the night." "This morning after breakfast, he read some newspapers and resumed work," Bruni said, without specifying when Francis would be discharged from Rome's Gemelli hospital. On Thursday, Francis tweeted that he was "touched by the many messages received in these hours" and thanked people for their "closeness and prayer." Bruni said on Wednesday that the infection would "require a few days of appropriate hospital medical therapy," but he was "touched by the many messages received and expresses his gratitude for the closeness and prayer." In recent months, the pontiff has struggled with mobility issues related to his knee, requiring him to use a wheelchair. Despite his ailments, Francis has remained active and traveled overseas this year. He has previously stated that if his health deteriorates, he may desire to follow in Benedict's footsteps and resign from his position as Pope.
